ABOUT US......
St John's is a member of the Anglican Church of Southern Africa (visit their website at www.anglicanchurchsa.org), and is part of the Diocese of  Natal and the Archdeaconry of Pinetown.  The Diocese of Natal is twinned with the Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham in the UK.  To learn more about this, click here.
St John's was established in 1856, and was one of the first churches in the Pinetown district (learn more about the history of St Johns on the "Heritage" page). At one time the parish included Westville, Kloof, Hillcrest, New Germany, Clermont and Mariannridge.  Independent churches have been now established in all these centres except New Germany.

 Worship:
Sunday services are held at 07:00 and 09:00.  Both are Communion services, and at 09:00 we have a sung Eucharist with organ and choir.  At 09:00 there is Sunday School (“Kidzown”) for the children in the main hall and Teen Church in the “small” hall for high school students.  We have a strong core of young people who are committed to God and to St John’s.
There are 2 weekday Eucharists, one at 07:00 on a Wednesday and one at 09:00 on a Friday.  In addition, communion is taken regularly to the housebound.

Music:
St John’s
has a choir in the tradition of the Royal School of Church Music, which was established about 50 years ago.  We have a pipe organ, and the organist / music director is Christopher Cockburn.  We use some traditional hymns, with a generous mix of more modern “choruses”, and try to have something for all tastes.

Youth:
There is an active youth group, who meet on Friday nights at 18:30 for fun and fellowship at the church.  Click through to read more.

House Groups:
We have a number of House Groups who meet weekly or fortnightly either in members’ homes or at the church.  There are times and days to suit most people, and all are encouraged to belong to a house group. The groups share study material, and each leader chooses material best suited to his/her members.  For Lent or Advent, particular study material may be recommended by the diocese or by the Rector, and most house groups will use this material, thus developing our understanding of faith together.  Click through to "Housegroups" to find out about times and places of meeting.

Environment and Ecology:

St John’s has a very passionate core of people who meet regularly to discuss local and current environmental problems, and who are working to have our parish registered as an Eco-congregation.....Click through to read more.

Outreach:
The people of St John’s are involved in many outreach projects, e.g. soup making for Steve’s Kitchen at the Methodist Church, which feeds the poverty-stricken; collecting second-hand clothes; the food baskets, which are filled by the congregation on a Sunday morning and distributed to the needy in the surrounding townships; and the AIDS ministry.  This last was established as a support group for the community workers, working among the people affected and infected by HIV AIDS in the townships in and around the parish (Cleremont, Kwa’ndabeka, Hammarsdale, etc.).  In 2001 this group registered as a non-governmental organisation under the name Ukukuthaza, in order to be able to raise funds independently.  They provide 90 food parcels per month, which help to feed the many AIDS orphans in the communities.

In 2007, Revd Caroline Beech went to Israel as part of the Ecumenical Accompaniment Programme to Israel and Palestine (EAPPI).  Click through to read about her experience.  A training course is being established in Durban for anyone interested in joining this programme - Caroline will be happy to give details to those who are interested.

This plaque is laid in the paving stones of the pathway leading to the church from the parking area, in remembrance of the dedication of the new halls by Bishop Philip in 1975.

The historic Lychgate, which stands at the entrance to the cemetery in the church gardens.  The gate once stood at the corner of St John's Avenue, and provided access to the cemetery from the road, but vandalism forced its removal to a safer place within the church grounds.

The Garden of Remembrance, where the ashes of deceased parishioners are buried, is on the site of the old church.
